Private Vascular Medicine in the Heart of Munich

Angiology, as a specialty within Internal Medicine, focuses on the function and diseases of the arteries, veins, and the smallest blood vessels (capillaries). The areas of expertise of our vascular medicine specialists at the Center / Internal Medicine / Fünf Höfe include degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the limb vessels (e.g., peripheral arterial disease), the brain-supplying vessels (narrowing of the carotid artery, stroke), and abdominal vessels (e.g., aortic aneurysm, narrowing of the renal or visceral arteries). Diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins and thrombosis are also an essential part of angiological practice.

State-of-the-art equipment combined with highly trained staff allows our experienced angiologist Dr. Gerson Strubel to accurately assess even early vascular changes. Our close and trusted collaboration with recognized vascular centers ensures not only fast and high-quality advanced vascular diagnostics (CT angiography, MR angiography, fine-needle angiography) but also intervention-based or surgical treatments (vascular surgery), forming part of our comprehensive care spectrum.

As a trained preventive medicine specialist, Dr. Strubel places special emphasis on a holistic approach to individual therapy planning and the prevention of vascular diseases. The patient, with their wishes, hopes, and concerns, is always at the center of his work.

Background

TREATMENT FOCUS

Peripheral Arterial Disease

Peripheral arterial disease, often abbreviated as PAD, is a chronic condition affecting the arteries in the arms, legs, or pelvis, commonly resulting from atherosclerosis. Narrowing or even blockages of the leg and arm arteries lead to significantly reduced blood flow to the extremities.

Patients often report leg pain and need to take frequent breaks while walking. The dreaded “smoker’s leg” is one of the painful symptoms PAD can cause. Unsurprisingly, tobacco use is one of the major risk factors for PAD, along with diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, and various metabolic disorders.

With over six million affected individuals in Germany alone, PAD is considered a widespread “common disease.” Men over 50 are significantly more likely to develop it than women of the same age. The problem: symptoms such as occasional leg pain are often ignored for months or even years, allowing the vascular disease to progress unnoticed. The consequences can be severe, as nearly three out of four patients eventually suffer a heart attack or stroke.

At your Zentrum / Innere Medizin / Fünf Höfe, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases. Examinations and therapies are, of course, conducted using the latest technology:

  • Ultrasound of the leg and arm arteries (color-coded duplex sonography)
  • CW Doppler sonography (Ankle-Brachial Index)
  • Oscillography
  • Walking distance assessment
  • Toe and finger artery pressure measurement
  • Pulse wave velocity
  • Assessment of endothelial function (Flow Mediated Slowing)
  • Vascular screening for diabetes (TOPP-ABI)
  • Transcutaneous partial pressure of oxygen (tcPO2)

TREATMENT FOCUS

Narrowing of Brain-Supplying Vessels

For most patients, a narrowing (stenosis) of the carotid artery or brain vessels comes as an unexpected diagnosis. Often, patients seek treatment due to visual disturbances, speech problems, or numbness and weakness in the arms or legs. However, significant vascular changes requiring treatment can also be present without these symptoms.

In the presence of risk factors for atherosclerosis or relevant complaints, an examination of the carotid arteries by a recognized vascular specialist, an angiologist, or at a vascular center using targeted vascular ultrasound can usually clarify which therapy is recommended. But don’t worry: a stroke or vascular surgery is not always imminent. In many cases, medication alone can achieve the desired treatment outcome.

With our experienced team led by specialist Dr. Gerson Strubel at your Zentrum / Innere Medizin / Fünf Höfe, you are definitely in good hands.

  • Ultrasound of the neck vessels (carotid duplex sonography)
  • Ultrasound of brain vessels (so-called transcranial duplex sonography)
  • Ankle-Brachial Index measurement
  • Pulse wave velocity measurement
  • Assessment of endothelial function

TREATMENT FOCUS

Narrowing of Abdominal and Visceral Vessels

Narrowing of arteries in the human torso can affect internal organs such as the kidneys, liver, or intestines, as well as the legs. Both acute, sudden blockages and slowly progressing vascular diseases play an important role.

Patients often report abdominal pain, particularly after eating. If left untreated, narrowing of the abdominal and visceral vessels can lead to permanent damage—or even tissue death—of the affected organs. Pain in the legs or buttocks is also possible.

At your Zentrum / Innere Medizin / Fünf Höfe, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of abdominal vascular diseases. Examinations and therapies are, of course, performed using the latest technology:

  • Ultrasound of visceral and renal arteries (color-coded duplex sonography)
  • CW Doppler sonography (Ankle-Brachial Index)
  • Oscillometry
  • Pulse wave velocity measurement
  • Assessment of endothelial function

Please note that these examinations should be performed on an empty stomach, preferably in the early morning.
