The internationally renowned physician Prof. Dr. Steinmetz M.D. completed his clinical and scientific education in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism with a focus on diabetology and lipid metabolism at the Philipps University of Marburg, the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, the Pasteur Institute in Lille and the Université Sophi Antipolis, Nice, France, as well as at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the University of Vienna. He held the position of senior physician in these areas of expertise for more than ten years and subsequently chief physician of a large clinic for internal medicine specializing in diabetology and endocrinology. As a Heisenberg professor, he distinguished himself as a proven expert in the field of lipid metabolism and represents this area clinically and scientifically. He has been the director of studies of international surveys on lipid-lowering drugs and, over several years, led an international work group of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) to standardize the lipoprotein Lp (a). In accordance with evidence-based medicine, he now brings his many years of clinical experience to the Center of Internal Medicine Fünf Höfe.

    Clinical and Scientific Focus:

    Clinical and experimental research in the field of lipid metabolism and arteriosclerosis, especially coronary heart disease. Structure-function connections of apolipoproteins, transgenic animal models of antiatherosclerotic lipoproteins, enzymes in lipid metabolism, genetics of lipid metabolism disorders, therapeutic aspects in lipid metabolism, assay systems for the quantification of apoproteins, diabetic dyslipidemia.
