Dr. med. Christof Weitzel

The experienced physician looks back on a multifaceted career in research, clinical care, and private practice. Following extensive training in intensive care and scientific research—including a DFG research fellowship in the United States—Dr. Weitzel served for many years as Chief Physician of internal medicine departments as well as a gastroenterologist in private practice.
After studying chemistry, mineralogy, and human medicine, as well as completing his doctorate on bile acid metabolism, he furthered his expertise through multi-year research stays at renowned US universities (University of California San Diego and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) focusing on the molecular mechanisms of liver regeneration. This was followed by clinical training at the University Hospitals of Freiburg and Regensburg, as well as Chief Physician positions at several internal medicine clinics in Swabia. From 2014 to 2026, he managed a highly specialized gastroenterology practice and medical care center (MVZ) in Kempten.
Based on sound scientific knowledge and decades of clinical experience, his goal is to provide every patient with individual, personal care adhering to the highest medical standards.
Clinical and Scientific Focus Areas
Diagnostic and interventional endoscopy (including ERCP and ultrasound), gastroenterological oncology (DGVS certificate), hepatology and biliary diseases, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as molecular mechanisms of liver regeneration and hepatocyte physiology.
